I was raised to be independent and resourceful, leaning into my family’s cultural values of work hard, don’t complain, and don’t talk about your feelings or anything uncomfortable. My core belief about the world was that if you need something, figure it out and get it for yourself.
This belief stuck with me into adulthood, but only in hindsight did I realize that I put myself at a disadvantage by not seeking advice, guidance and feedback. Doing it all by myself made everything harder than it needed to be, at every stage of my life.
It was just after 2 am on a Tuesday morning, at a regular meeting of our Board of Directors. It was the norm that I had been at work since 8 am the previous morning….and I would be in the office again in less than seven hours. I’d been doing this for nine years, and it never occurred to me how unreasonable it was, or how burned out I was. Burnout is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion caused by chronic stress, often related to work demands, expectations and pressures. It can affect anyone who feels overwhelmed, underappreciated or unsupported.
